It was known as Pera (meaning "Across" in Greek) during the Middle Ages, and this name remained in common use until the early 20th century and the establishment of the Turkish Republic.
The district encompasses other neighborhoods located north of the Golden Horn, including Galata (the medieval Genoese citadel from which Beyoğlu itself originated), Karaköy, Cihangir, Şişhane, Tepebaşı, Tarlabaşı, Dolapdere and Kasımpaşa, and is connected to the old city center across the Golden Horn through the Galata Bridge and Unkapanı Bridge. Beyoğlu is the most active art, entertainment and night life centre of Istanbul.

Buse is a great contact person: we arrived w/ different flights around 11 PM and she arranged a joint pickup for the ride to the apartment where she (despite the late hour) was happy to receive us and to explain everything in detail. The apartment is beautiful in an old charm way. Nice old creaky floors, great ceiling height, great views of the Bosporus and nearby town, and light from two sides of the apartment and a third aspect towards a ventilation shaft (we are two architects travelling with 3 20+ children and notice these things). It is furnished in a relaxed but useful way, sitting areas, eating area and with a bookshelf full of recent guidebooks. No need to bring your own! (BTW: the best one is by far the Time Out guide. Great articles and very useful maps. I had bought the Lonely planet one, but it really wasn't up to par. There are 3 copies in the shelf :-).
The kitchen is very well supplied w/ dishwasher and everything you will need. Since everyone praises the terrace first, I save that for last: an incredible experience and only two floors up! Also there are two: one facing southeast (Asia and the Bosporus w/ the bridge) and the other southwest with an great Sultanet view. I watched sunrises, sunsets, had meals and even a few nice cigarettes (even though I don't usually smoke anymore...) up there. It's really worth the stay by itself. The area around Golata tower is touristy of course and crowded with a selfies army, but once in the apartment you are clear of that, and within walking distance to most things to see. The apartment is very quiet, being so high up.
Highly recommended! Only negative comment would be the 5th floor location without elevator, but that didn't trouble us. Nice but a bit worn staircase with marble tile landings (cracked). Also the toilet could have been turned 90° and facing the room for better function (I'm 1,93 so it was a bit a bit jammed). To buy food I went all over the hill, only to find the best market almost below the tower (on the street that descends towards the bridge). Enjoy your stay!
We arrived in 4 people in the apartment, located next to the Gallata tower. Centrally located, it is rather spacious full-service to live in good conditions. The big plus of this apartment is the terrace which is just amazing. I highly recommend it!
Wonderful location and the apartment is superb. A lift would make things easier but otherwise, I rcommend this place. Thank you again, Buse. Pierre & his team
The apartment was spacious and really wonderful--the photos give a truthful impression of its beauty. The view from the terrace is simply terrific--in fact we skipped visiting Galata tower, as there was no point waiting in queue for a view of the city and the golden horn (and the tower itself) which we had without effort on the terrace. Buse was a very friendly and helpful host--many thanks to her. As another guest has called the appartment 'a bit worn down': I would rather say the apartment is refurbished (kitchen and bathroom are up to modern standards) without sacrificing the original character while still keeping it affordable. If you prefer a modern apartment with its Home Depot/Ikea look, there are plenty available.
Apartment had an excellent location - right by The Gelata Tower.
Hostess Buse was very accomodating and friendly. She arranged transport back to the airport for us - very reliable.
Apartment was very clean and had all the amenities that you could hope for.
Would definately stay at this apartment again on future visits to Istanbul.
Buse was great! helpful and not over bearing. she very nicely accommodated our weird flying schedule and was very clear in all her directions. Plus she gave us some very good tips for local restaurants.
The apartment was charming and well situated, and the terrace magical, Overall a really perfect experience.
this apartment is fantastic - full of character and atmosphere and in an incredible location. Look at a picture of the Galata Tower and the next roof top down is the roof top you have access to if you stay here. The views are incredible - the whole of the city is right there for you to watch the sun set over. Priceless. Buse is very lovely too. Kind and helpful and honest.
Nice apartment. A bit worn down, but really nice decor. Good communication. Fantastic rooftop terrace. It would be nice with some sun chairs and decent furniture on the terrace. That can't be to expensive, and would really heighten the experience. But the view from up there is simply the best in Istanbul.
The apartment in Beyoglu is just amazing and we can strongly recommend it to any family. The building is in a very nice area and the apartment itself is very tasteful and clean with a good bathroom and kitchen. But just stunning is the rooftop-terrace. Imagine you are having breakfast overlooking the complete city and Bosporus, or having a BBQ when the sun goes down, while the people in the Galatatower next to you (who paid 16 Liras and where in a queue for an hour) are observing you with great envy!
Buse as a host was fantastic, she realy took care, everything was 100% ok and as agreed, and she arranged the best taxi-driver in Istanbul. Tessekur ederim!
The appartment is great! Good location near by nice restaurants and shops. Best place to stay!
